ACS <Back to Top>
Address Correction Service (USPS). Through an agreement with the US Postal Service, codes are added to UI mailings that significantly reduce the cost of returned mail items and provide an interface with automated review and insertion of address changes. ACS codes are assigned and generated by Jtackett or through campus mail services.
Activity Code
Codes that are used to indicate campus affiliations of students, such as Greek houses, dorms, student government, clubs, organizations, groups, others.
Actuarial Table
Calculation based on an individual's age estimating that individual’s life expectancy.

See Custom Reports.
Address Hierarchy
The hierarchy of address types (MA, BU, PR) used to pull a constituent's address for the data warehouse and for some reporting. AZRADDR uses MA, BU, PR hierarchy to determine the MAIL address.
Address Types
All addresses in Banner are assigned an address type. A complete list can be obtained by entering an Identification Screen such as APAIDEN or SPAIDEN, tabbing to the address type block and pressing the search key or F6.
Advancement Address Type
Addresses that can be maintained by Advancement users- MA, PR, RE, SA, GR, BU, MG, CM.
ALUM
The donor category applied to records of former students and to currently enrolled students who have earned a degree or have reached senior status 90 credits. Prior to 1970, the ALUM category was sometimes added to records of students who attended for only a brief time.
Annual Gift
A level of giving defined at the University of Idaho as a gift that is less than $25,000, excluding payments on pledges of $25,000 and over. Also see "major giving."
Annual Giving
Programs associated with solicitation of gifts that can be repeated annually at the same or progressively higher levels, i.e. Vandal Connect phone program, direct mail, etc.
Annual Giving Club
Acknowledgements of yearly giving.
ASAL (Associate Alumni)
Beginning in November 1982, faculty and staff records were coded as Associate Alumni to link them with a portion of campus. These records were assigned a "B" identification with the first three digits being the academic year. The people received a certificate welcoming them to the association and were mailed the Alumni Magazine.
Ask
Solicitation for a specific project for a specific amount.
AZRDNFY
Advancement Custom Report- Donor Fiscal Year - provides summarized giving information on a group of donors.
AZRLBLS
Advancement Custom Report- Labels Process- runs data through a process that formats them as labels.
Banner role <Back to Top>
The level of access assigned to an individual user. Provides access to a specific group of Banner forms.
Benefactor
A donor; backer; supporter.
Bequest
A clause in a will that enables individuals to make distributions of a specific amount or a percentage to the University of Idaho. A gift of personal property through an individual's will. This may be either a specific amount or a percentage of the estate.
Bequest Expectancy
Amount of money or percentage of an estate expected from a person's will.
Bridge
A move from cultivation to intensive cultivation or the move between intensive cultivation and solicitation whereby the UI’s vision and needs have been shared with donor in a more personal setting; most often the final step or "move" prior to solicitation.
Brio
Ad-hoc data query and reporting software.
Brio Server
Distribution server for Brio queries/reports.
Bronze Circle
Annual giving between $1,000 and $2,499.
BU
Business address, telephone, email type. Generally is the constituent's employment information.
Campaign <Back to Top>
A capital or comprehensive fund-raising vehicle for focusing attention upon the needs and aspirations of the university. Can be setup in advance with goals and components allowing continual tracking of progress.
Charitable Gift Annuity [CGA]
A contract between a donor and a charitable organization to pay an income stream, expressed as a percentage of the original principal amount, to not more than two people for life in exchange for a gift of cash or other asset(s).
Charitable Lead Annuity Trust [CLAT]
Gift of cash or other asset(s) into trust. An income stream, expressed as an agreed-upon percentage of the original principal amount, is paid to one or more charitable organizations for a set term of years. On termination the remainder goes back to the donor [Grantor CLAT] or passes to the donor’s heirs or other named individuals [Non-grantor CLAT].
Charitable Lead Unitrust [CLUT]
Gift of cash or other asset(s) into trust. An income stream, expressed as an agreed-upon percentage of the underlying principal (revalued each year), is paid to one or more charitable organizations for a set term of years. On termination the remainder goes back to the donor [Grantor CLUT] or passes to the donor’s heirs or other named individuals [Non-grantor CLUT].
Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust [CRAT]
Gift of cash or other asset(s) into trust. An income stream, expressed as an agreed-upon percentage of the original principal amount, is paid to the donor and/or others for life or for a set term not to exceed 20 years. On termination the remainder passes to a charitable organization.
Charitable Remainder Unitrust [CRUT]
Gift of cash or other asset(s) into trust. An income stream, expressed as an agreed-upon percentage of the underlying principal (revalued each year), is paid to the donor and/or others for life or for a set term not to exceed 20 years. On termination the remainder passes to a charitable organization. Net Income CRUT [NICRUT] – same as CRUT except it pays the lesser of the agreed-upon percentage and the actual income earned by the trust. Net Income With Makeup CRUT [NIMCRUT] – same as NICRUT except that any deficiencies in payments in any given year (i.e. less than the agreed-upon percentage) are “made up” in subsequent years when income exceeds the agreed-upon percentage.
Class Year
The "reunion" year. Must be entered on ALUM records. Generally, it is the year the constituent's first degree is earned. Class year is system calculated for senior records during the "Student to Advancement" migration based on an expected graduation date. It is then automatically updated at the actual time of graduation. The constituent is allowed to select a particular class year that may be different than the actual year graduated. See "preferred class."
Close, Closing, Closure
The end of a particular solicitation cycle. The close may result in a gift, a signed endowment agreement, or with a denial to the solicitation.
Confidential
A person may request that all or parts of his/her directory information remain confidential with a written request to the registrar's or human resources office. These offices update the level of confidentiality which automatically sets the confidentiality flag on APASBIO/APAPERS. A warning will appear on any record with confidentiality flags. Check with the advancement services office before releasing any information on a record with the confidentiality flag.
Consecutive gifts
Gifts given over multiple years without skipping any years.
Constituent
An individual or non-person entity whose Banner record includes one or more donor categories.
Constituent Type (codes)
See "donor category."
Contactable
UI may contact the constituent (phone, mail, email). No exclusion codes exist in the record for general contact.
Contribution
A gift, a pledge payment or a pledge.
Cultivate
A process to build and maintain the interest of UI’s constituency in supporting its mission and programs.
Cultivation Cycle
The process a fundraiser follows that takes a prospect from discovery, through cultivation, to solicitation and stewardship. The cycle may repeat itself many times over the life of the donor.
Current Gift
Cash or in-kind gift that is to be utilized within the fiscal year (vs. endowed or deferred gift).
Custom Reports
A service provided by advancement services. Data from Banner is pulled and formatted for delivery based on requests from UI staff, faculty and campus organizations. A wide variety of information and formats are available. Also called ad hoc reports.
Data Warehouse <Back to Top>
Data tables derived from a database application (e.g., Banner) where the data is rearranged and reformatted to facilitate data analysis and reporting.
Datamart
Data warehouse created for a specific reporting need (generally smaller than data warehouse).
Deceased
A person, known to Banner, who has died. Depending on how the person's record is involved in Banner, one or more Banner module users participate in changing the record. Addresses are inactivated and links with spouse records are changed.
Deferred Gift
A gift that will come at a person’s death or at some set time in the future.
Designation
Gift designation, identifies the fund or program the gift is to benefit.
Direct Mail
Solicitation by mail.
Discovery Visit
The initial contact(s) with a prospect to determine interest in and gift potential for the University of Idaho. Most often is a personal visit, but can also be by phone.
Donor Category
A code that identifies the relationship between a constituent and the Banner advancement module. ALUM, FRND, PARC, PARF, FAST, FFST, RFST, ORGN, CORP, among others. A record can have one or more donor categories.
Donor Retention
The ability to keep our donors involved and investing in the university on a regular basis.
Duplicate Record
A single entity (person or non-person) that has more than one Banner record.
Email Contactable <Back to Top>
UI may send email. No email exclusion codes exist in the record.
Email Solicitable
UI may solicit via email. No email solicitation exclusion codes exist in the record.
Endowment
Money or income-producing assets in which the principal is permanently held by UI and invested by the trust and investment office to provide growth to the corpus and annual income that benefits a specific program identified by the donor.
Endowment Agreement
Agreement between the donor, the University of Idaho and the foundation that describes how the income from invested principal will be used.
Event
Function for fund/friend raising and appreciation with a specific outcome defined.
Extraordinary Access
Special access to specific Banner tables that is given outside of the normal Banner access process. No longer given out.
FAST (Faculty And Staff) <Back to Top>
The donor category added to records of individuals currently employed by the University of Idaho. Based on UI human resource records. Updated quarterly.
FFST (Former Faculty and Staff
The donor category added to records of individuals who are no longer employed by the University of Idaho and who do not qualify for retirement benefits. Based on UI human resource records. FFST replaces FAST.
Full Check Amount
Check amount representing the donor's gift. Since this amount is not currently entered into Banner, we re-generate it by summing a donors gifts/pledges for a given day.

Annual giving between $2,500 and $4,999.
Gem Society
Cumulative Giving of $1,000,000 or more.
General Person Team
A committee that includes representatives from offices that make large numbers of Banner updates each year. The current configuration of the committee is according to appointments by the Banner directors group in 1999.
Geo Region
Geographic Region. An area identified by up to five types of criteria - zip code, state, county, nation, city. Geo regions are "built" and saved in Banner and provide a quick resource for users of the population system. Very useful for areas that have many zip codes and assure consistency from project to project. Most geo regions are "within x miles" of a specific point. The batch insert program can be used to add large numbers of zip codes to a geo region.
GID
General Identification. An outdated term. Modern Banner users refer to records with V#, student ID, non-person ID or identifiers from previous information systems. See V#, student ID, non-person ID.
Gift
Something donated (cash, assets, real-estate, art) that a value can be assigned or estimated.
Gift Clubs
University designations reflecting different annual and cumulative giving amounts designed to honor donors.
Gift Credit
A portion of hard credit that comes straight from the gift. It is the amount of a gift, minus any multiple credit given away to other records. For example, if a gift is received for $100 and it is split between two records 50/50, then the record the gift was processed under has $50 gift credit, while the other record would receive $50 multiple credit.
Gifting Vehicle
Type of agreement describing how the gift is distributed.
Gold Circle
Annual gifts and/or pledges between $10,000 and $24,999 for individuals. Annual gifts and/or pledges between $20,000 and $49,999 for corporations, foundations and organizations.
GR
Gift Receipting Address Type. Assigned exclusively by gift receipting.
Grad Year
The year an individual graduated from the University of Idaho as recorded by the registrar's office. This date is on the APAADEG screen and is not changed.
Hard Credit <Back to Top>
A part of a gift that can be directly associated to a donor. For example, if a gift is received for $100 and it is split between two records 50/50, then each record gets $50 of hard credit.
Heritage Society
Someone who has included the University of Idaho in their estate plans. A special purpose code is added to these individuals' records.
Honorary Alum (HOAL)
A individual who has been recognized through a nomination and selection process by the UI Alumni Association for service, leadership or contributions of resources.

Annual giving between $250 and $499.
Idaho Outlook
Publication from gift planning services describing various way to give to the university.
Idaho Society
Cumulative giving between $100,000 and $499,999.
Inactive Prospect.
A status code (I) within prospect management indicating an entity is not currently being considered a major gift prospect for UI support. An inactivated prospect may be reactivated at any time.
Intensive Cultivation
A period of serious cultivation (generally up to six months) leading to a major gift solicitation. Contact with the donor is quite frequent (at least monthly) during this time.
Irrevocable Bequest
Documentation of the intent to give money or property to the UI through an estate plan that theoretically cannot be revoked

Mailing Address. Updated by all modules on campus.
Mail Code
A code in the Banner form APAMAIL used to identify publications received by an individual. A mailing list identifier.
Mail Contactable
Has an active address and no applicable mail exclusion.
Mail Exclusion
A code placed in the record to prevent the individual from being included in lists. A complete list of exclusion codes can be found on APAMAIL. By paging down to the mail exclusions form and pressing F6.
Mail Solicitable
An individual for whom an active address in available and for whom no applicable mail exclusion code exists. Specific mail exclusion codes prevent the inclusion in lists for solicitations.
Mailable
Has an active address and no applicable mail exclusion.
Mailing
A specific mail piece.
Major gift
Any gift of $25,000 to $1,000,000. Also see annual gift and principal gift.
Major giving
Programs associated with gifts that are large one-time gifts. This may include ultimate gifts. Also see "annual giving."
Match Credit
A portion of soft credit that is received via another records gift, specifically a company with a matching gift program.
Matching Gift Companies
Employers that contribute because of an employee's gift. Ratio varies.
Memo Credit
A portion of soft credit that is received via another record's gift. The partners in a firm may each receive 100% memo (or soft) credit.
Move
A type of significant action that progresses the prospect through the cultivation cycle. Such move types include discovery, cultivation, bridge, solicitation, stewardship, follow-up after the solicitation and closure.
Moves manager
Also known as a “relationship manager,” the staff person who has the primary, direct or indirect responsibility for moving a prospect toward a solicitation.
Multiple Credit
A portion of hard credit that is received via another record's gift. For example, if a gift is received for $50 and it is split between two records 50/50, then the record the gift was processed under has a $25 gift credit, while the second record has a $25 multiple credit.
Natural partner <Back to Top>
A staff person or persons who also has a vested interest in cultivating and eventually soliciting a prospect, but does not have the primary responsibility of the relationship manager (see "moves manager").
New donor acquisition
An effort to get people to give who have never given before.
No Contact of Any Kind
A code placed on a record to prevent that individual from being included on all mail, phone calls, and e-mail lists.
Non-person ID
An identifier for a business entity that is created (generally) from the first three letters of the first two words in the business name.
Not Mailable
Has a mail exclusion code that prevents individual from being included in any list for mailings.
Not Solicitable
Has a mail exclusion code that prevents individual from being included in any contact for solicitations.
Official Email <Back to Top>
A University of Idaho email type. It cannot be updated or inactivated by advancement services. If an individual has an OF email it will always be the preferred email address.
Original College
The college in which a student began taking classes during initial enrollment.
OSR
Opportunity Select Rating – a value assigned from an outside screening service that indicates how close a person is to the UI, thus helping to determine the likelihood of a positive fundraising effort. The scores range from 1-15, with one indicating the closest relationship to UI.
PARC <Back to Top>
Donor Category code- Parent of currently enrolled student. Updated at least three times per year.
PARF
Donor Category code- Parent of former student. Updated at least three times per year.
Phone Contactable
Has an active phone number and no phone exclusion.
Phone Solicitable
An individual for whom an active phone number is available and for whom no applicable mail exclusion code exists. Specific mail exclusion codes prevent the inclusion in lists for solicitations.
PIDM
A unique system-assigned identifier. Every record in Banner has a PIDM. The PIDM is not visible to users.
Planned Gift
A gift that is typically made from assets rather than income, and often involves the assistance of a professional staff person, a qualified volunteer, or the donor’s advisors to complete the gift. Can also be the "ultimate" or greatest gift that an individual makes to the UI.
Pledge
A formal intent to make a gift.
Pledge Credit
A portion of hard credit that comes from the pledge. It is the amount of a pledge, minus any multiple credit given away to other records. For example, if a pledge is received for $100 and it is split between two records 50/50, then the record the pledge was processed under has $50 pledge credit, while the other record would receive $50 multiple credit.
Pledge Outstanding Amount
An amount outstanding on a pledge. For example, if a pledge was for $100 and payments of $75 have been made, the pledge outstanding amount would be the $25 remaining.
Population
A collection of constituents. A population contains one or more population groups.
Population Group
Constituent records that have attributes in common. A population group is defined by a set of parameters.
Portfolio
A listing of prospects assigned to a particular fundraiser who then serves as the relationship manager.
PR
Address type, Permanent Address.
Preferred
A client service option allowing the client's preference to replace the automatically generated information.
Preferred Class
The "reunion" year. Must be entered on ALUM records. Generally is the year the constituent's first degree is earned. Preferred class is system calculated for records during the student to advancement migration. The constituent may select a year. See "class year."
Preferred College
The college an individual wishes to be associated with. In the advancement module, this can be adjusted to client preference using the preferred college in APACONS.
President's Circle
Annual giving clubs at the $1,000 or higher level. This includes Bronze, Garnet, Silver, Gold, and Leadership Circles.
Primary Donor Category
Of all the donor categories that can be assigned (alumni, faculty/staff, parent, student), this one is the one indicated to be the one they are first and formost identified by for reporting and solicitation.
Principal Gift
Gift over $1,000,000.
Principle Gift Prospect
A donor with the interest and capacity to make a gift of $1,000,000 or more. Most often assigned to a relationship manager within the central office, with the primary moves made by the president of the University of Idaho.
Project
The area or areas of interest for a particular donor. Codes for projects are mainly associated with colleges or programs such as athletics and the jazz festival, or mini-campaigns.
Proposal
A solicitation, written or verbal, seeking funds for a particular project or projects at the University of Idaho.
Prospect
Any entity (person or non-person) that has been identified with the potential to provide major-gift level support (current or future) to the University of Idaho. They must also indicate philanthropic interest in the UI.
Prospect Management
A process by which identified, active prospects are assigned to fundraising staff and monitored for movement through the cultivation cycle, as well as protected from over cultivation/solicitation. The process is conducted via a subset of forms in Banner advancement located in AMAINFO screens.
Prospect status
Used in prospect management to identify the current standing of a prospect in the cultivation cycle or the ranking of a solicitation (from pre-solicitation, or intensive cultivation, to solicitation, to funding or denying the request for support). Status characters for prospect cultivation are numerical: 0-7. Status characters for proposals are alpha: X (to be solicited), P (proposal presented), D (denied) and F (funded).

Describes a type of access to Banner. User can only query Banner, not update any information. More generally, "asking a question of the database."
Query User
Limited access to Banner. User can only query Banner, cannot update or maintain any information.
Rating <Back to Top>
The largest projected amount a prospect is capable of giving at a single time (single gift or multi-year pledge), should the prospect be sufficiently interested in the UI. Ratings start at A9, or $1,000-4,999, to a high of A1, or $1 million+.
Recognition Credit
An amount that is calculated from a record's hard credit and soft credit that is used for donor recognition. It consists of the full amounts of all gifts that are in some way tied to the record. For example, if a record had hard credit for a gift of $100 that was split 50/50 to another record, they would have recognition credit of $100 for the gift, not the $50 of hard credit they received. Also, if that record had soft credit of $50 from a $75 gift their business had made, they would have recognition credit of $75 for the gift, not the $50 soft credit they received. Note: Currently, pledge credit is not included as a part of this figure.

Annual gifts between $100 and $249.

Request
A formal method for initiating a report or information to be created and delivered.
Retired Faculty or Classified Staff (RFST)
Donor category code assigned to individuals based on official UI human resources records that connote a retirement benefits relationship with the UI.

Seasonal Address type.
Screening report
A report, based on certain parameters such as class year or address location, for a volunteer to review and identify other potential donors.
Senior class gift program
A program within the University of Idaho Student Foundation designed to solicit funds (often first gifts) from the graduating class. Traditionally, the funds raised from this program are used to purchase an item as a "gift" back to the UI that reflects a time-honored UI tradition, e.g, a historical marker on "Hello Walk," historical photographs framed and hung in the "Teaching Learning Center," etc.
Silver Circle
Annual gift and/or pledges between $5,000 and $9,9999 for individuals. Annual gift between $5,000 and $19,999 for corporations, foundations and organizations.
Soft Credit
A part of a gift that can be indirectly associated with a donor. For example, if a gift is received for $100 by a company, the owner of the company may get $100 soft credit, while the company itself gets $100 hard credit.
Solicit
Asking for a specific gift to a program for a specific ammount. Can be either written or verbal. However, in the case of a verbal solicitation, appropriate written follow up between the university and the donor must include solicitation amount and program intent before the solicitation is formally recognized.
Solicitable
UI may solicit the individual or non-person entity. No solicitation exclusion codes exist in the record.
Special Purpose Code
A code set up in APASPUR to identify groups of people with certain attributes.
Stewardship
The act of thanking donors and caring for the assets given to the UI for its students, faculty, facilities and programs.
Student ID
The student ID is the personally-identifying number for each student. Usually three digits a hyphen and five digits.
Syringa Society
Cumulative giving of $500,000 to $999,999.
TAG <Back to Top>
Time Keepers Advisory Group. Implements policies and procedures set forward by the university. Seeks input on proposed changes from group members.
Trust
See Charitable Lead Annuity Trust [CLAT], Charitable Lead Unitrust [CLUT], Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust [CRAT] and Charitable Remainder Unitrust [CRUT].
Ultimate gift <Back to Top>
The largest or final gift a donor is going to give; generally this is considered a transformational gift.
University Fellows
Annual gifts between $500 and $999.
V number <Back to Top>
A Banner generated identifier for a person. All person records have a V#. V + 8 digits.
Volunteer
Non-UI staff who assist in fundraising efforts.
VSE Category
Voluntary Support of Education Gift Categories. VSE is a standardized report used to make comparisons between institutions.
Wealth indicator (WI) <Back to Top>
A value from an outside screening service assigned to a prospect as an additional means of determining capability for major gift support to the UI. 99 is the highest value that can be applied to a record.
